Art editor Madeleine Damian pursues affairs that leave her despondent. After a disastrous romance with advertiser Felix Courtland leads to a suicide attempt, her ex‑lover and secretary Jack Garet blackmails her. She resigns, retreats to an isolated life, befriends neighbor David Cousins, but Courtland and Garet soon locate her and ruin her peace.
