A political drama set in Illyria in 1943‑45, depicting the assassination of a politician as the Nazi‑allied state faces Eastern Bloc annexation. Kaurismäki’s adaptation of Sartre’s Les Mains Sales follows Hugo (Matti Pellonpää), a freed journalist Raskolnikov, who seeks promotion when party leader Hoederer (Sulevi Peltola) is marked dead.
