What Happens in Dik Trom: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Dik Trom (2010) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Dik Trom lives with his parents, Ma Trom and Pa Trom, in the rural town of Dikkedam, where the locals are known for their love of food and indulgent lifestyles. Life in Dikkedam is enjoyable for Dik, who even excels in a diving tournament. However, a new opportunity arises when Pa dreams of starting his own restaurant and decides to move the family to the town of Dunhoven. There, they quickly discover a very different culture, one that emphasizes fitness and healthy living, setting them apart in this new community.

As they prepare to open their restaurant, which is conveniently located next to a gym run by the fitness trainer Dolf, they receive complimentary trial passes to the gym, along with a suggestion that they might benefit from some exercise themselves. Famished after a long day of moving, the family commemorates their new beginning with a grand feast, a typical celebration for them.

However, Dik's first day at school is far from welcoming. He faces judgment from classmates because of his name and weight. During recess, he witnesses a smaller boy named Sjak being bullied by Viktor and his gang. Standing up for Sjak earns Dik a newfound friendship and together they begin promoting the restaurant. Meanwhile, Dik finds himself smitten with a girl named Lieve, the daughter of Sonja, a well-known dietician. Although Lieve shows disinterest in his invitation to the restaurant, she secretly finds the food enticing.

On the day of the restaurant’s grand opening, the Trom family eagerly awaits customers, but the turnout is disheartening compared to the bustling gym next door. Their worries intensify when both Sonja and Dunhoven's Mayor Genio visit and deem their food unsafe, demanding healthier alternatives.

As the summer games approach, Viktor expresses his affections for Lieve, while Dik sees an opportunity to challenge him. To keep up with Dunhoven’s strict lifestyle, the Trom family reorganizes the restaurant menu to include healthier choices. However, the changes disappoint Pa, who longs for the essence of his original cuisine. Meanwhile, Dik's attempts to impress Lieve by sneaking her sweets disguised as healthy food lead to complications.

Tensions escalate when Viktor begins to feel threatened by the budding friendship between Dik and Lieve, culminating in him bullying Lieve into a forced relationship, which leaves Dik feeling insecure about his appearance. Desperate to protect their business, Pa resorts to cooking traditional, high-calorie meals again, which brings in customers but puts them at risk of exposure.

The inevitable happens when Sonja and Lieve discover the deceit and chaos ensues. Just when it seems their restaurant will be shut down, Pa makes a last-ditch effort to redeem himself by selling his famous hotdogs at the summer games. As chaos unfolds, Dik stays back fearing he won't measure up, but an unexpected visit from Lieve's long-lost father brings resolution.

Lieve bravely defies her mother's expectations, standing up for her right to choose happiness over conforming to societal norms by enjoying one of Pa's hotdogs publicly. As more customers flock to the restaurant, the community offers their support, leading to a heartfelt acceptance. The representatives relent, allowing the restaurant to stay open, and in the end, the Trom family feels united once again. Lieve breaks free from Viktor's hold, her father returns, and Dik finds himself blossoming in a relationship with Lieve, embracing life in all its flavors.
