Theater director Falke, dressed as a bat, is jailed after a carnival night. Released later by Director Frank, he seeks revenge on his friend Gabriel von Eisenstein. At Prince Orlofsky’s masked ball Falke arranges a mistaken‑identity plot: Eisenstein fails to recognize his wife, courts her, while maid Adele poses as the countess. Eisenstein is duped and Falke’s revenge succeeds.
