In a small Spanish village, Gloria, the imperious matriarch, presides over a troubled family with a stern hand and unyielding pride. The brothers, Óscar and Juan, wage frequent, heated disputes as they navigate loyalty, love, and survival. [Óscar], the eldest, and his iron-willed mother run the family grocery store, el Jardín (The Garden), a shop that thrives even in the shadowy depths of the black market. When [Óscar] marries Ana, the beloved lover of [Juan], the handsome second son decides to seek his fortunes in Madrid by joining the Nationalist Army, hoping to secure a better future. [Ana], who loves him, is heartbroken. Meanwhile, Ángela, the impoverished cousin who is pregnant with his child, watches as Juan leaves behind her for a life elsewhere. She moves to the countryside and gives birth to a boy, Juanito, who will become central to the family’s story.
Years pass. Óscar and Ana remain childless, while Gloria schemes to bring the illegitimate (and incestuous) grandson into the family circle as the rightful heir. When [Juanito] is struck by rheumatic fever while searching for his father, Ángela agrees to let him stay at el Jardín, where the boy is pampered and grows close to Ana. Yet the bond makes the already fragile family dynamic unstable, and Ángela eventually returns to her own life. One day Juanito learns that his father will visit with Franco’s retinue, and he finally meets him only to discover that he is merely a waiter in the service of Franco’s personal bodyguard.
As the years pass, Juanito recovers from his heart condition but becomes increasingly disillusioned with his father. He learns that his father is visiting Ana, Óscar’s wife, and a new conflict erupts. With money scarce, Ana steals one thousand pesetas from the family safe—the profits from the family’s wartime black-market activities—sparking a confrontation that will reveal the rifts in the household.
Gloria uncovers the theft but wrongly blames Ángela, who is hauled off by the Civil Guards. When the truth comes to light, Gloria urges Juan to return home and marry Ángela so the family will have a legitimate heir. But Ángela refuses to marry the callow Juan, who remains in love with Ana. The feud between Óscar and Juan—centered on love, loyalty, and rivalry—drives them into fierce quarrels that threaten to tear the family apart.
The next day, on Juanito’s saint’s day, the whole family gathers for celebrations. During the festivities, Juan tries to seduce first Ángela and then Ana in the hay barn. Traumatized by his behavior, Ana shoots him in the shoulder with a handgun. The moment is witnessed by a shocked Gloria, but the family portrait session in front of el Jardín continues, with a jacket tossed over the bleeding wound to hide it. The film closes on a freeze-frame of the family photograph, leaving no tidy conclusions but exposing the simmering hypocrisy and complexity of a petty bourgeois clan.
