After escaping a German concentration camp, Gervais takes the identity of a dead fellow prisoner. He learns the deceased had been writing to Hélène, a woman he never met, and moves in with her. Her sister Agnès dabbles in black magic—enough warning for most, but Gervais stays, intrigued by Julia, the dead man's sister, who refuses to expose him.
