Born in England as a German-Jewish emigrant, Thomas Brasch moved to East Germany with his family in the 1950s. While his father sought to contribute to the new state, Thomas pursued his passion for writing, revealing himself as a rebellious poet. His first play was banned, and he was expelled from film school. During the 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, Thomas and his girlfriend Sanda attempted to organize protests in Berlin, but failed. Betrayed by his own father to the Stasi, he was imprisoned before being paroled. He continued writing about love, revolution, and death, but faced rejection within the GDR.
