Ending explained
How Darkness of Man (2024) ends, in short: the final scene, the last twist and what it means for the characters. The full ending explained, with every spoiler, lives on its own page.
In the ending of Darkness of Man, Russell Hatch, an Interpol agent, uncovers the dark truth behind the seemingly innocent Mr. Kim, a shop owner in Los Angeles. It turns out that Kim has been using his local church as a front for his extensive drug operation, manipulating Russell with hidden motives rooted in his love for Esther and her son Jayden. As Russell investigates, he is led to believe that Dae Hyun, the younger son of Kim, is a rival trying to claim territory from the Russians and Koreans fighting over control of the area. Russell’s pursuit of the Russian kingpin Lazar turns out to be misguided, as Lazar reveals that he was only a pawn in Kim’s larger scheme. In a shocking twist, Lazar confesses that Kim has been secretly using Russell to eliminate the competition for his drug empire, with Dae Hyun and Lazar each serving Kim’s interests.
As Russell finally confronts Dae Hyun, he manipulates Jayden into killing Dae Hyun by sharing the truth about his father’s murder—an internal conflict within the gang. Russell then kills Dae Hyun’s remaining men, cementing his role in Kim’s plan. In the climax, Russell wears a wire to expose Kim’s true criminal identity. The evidence he gathers is handed over to Yates, sealing Kim’s fate as a drug lord disguised as a humble shopkeeper. With this revelation, Russell finally walks away from his old life, parts ways with his girlfriend Claire, and leaves behind the chaos with Jayden.
In the mid-credits scene, set a year later, we see Russell, now going by the name Mark Hale, sharing a peaceful moment with Jayden and Claire in a restaurant in New Mexico. This quiet scene hints at a possible future of normalcy, but it also teases the threat of revenge from Kim’s gang or the Russian and Korean factions, suggesting that their conflicts might not be over. Nonetheless, the film leaves the future open-ended, emphasizing that peace might be temporary in this underworld of crime and deception. Ultimately, the ending underscores how darkness, manipulation, and violence have a way of shaping lives, even those that seek redemption.
