Eric, a German officer, is recalled to Berlin and learns he’ll serve on the Russian front. His superior takes him to a villa where the army has gathered women to entertain the troops. There he meets Renata, his former lover, now a camp follower protecting her father. She departs at dawn in a convoy east, while their love endures war's harsh reality.
