The film begins with Charles Travis testing a diamond-powered communications laser in a secluded area of the Congo. This isolated setting near a dormant volcano sets the stage for the unfolding events that will disrupt their scientific endeavors.

Charles's excitement is abruptly shattered when his friend Jeffrey experiences a horrifying incident after entering a cave. An unseen creature attacks him, leaving Charles traumatized and shocked by the brutal nature of the jungle.

Back in Houston, Dr. Karen Ross anxiously awaits any news from Charles. The situation escalates when she receives a disturbing video feed from their camp, showing destruction and death, which is suddenly cut off by a rapid attack from an unknown creature.

R.B. Travis, the CEO of TraviCom, outlines his plan to venture into the Congo in search of a rare blue diamond believed to enhance their communication technology. He assures Karen that the mission's goal is to find his son Charles rather than merely to obtain riches.

Meanwhile, Dr. Peter Elliott works with his assistant Richard to teach their gorilla, Amy, human communication. They develop a method to interpret Amy's sign language, but Peter grows increasingly worried about her mental health as she draws unsettling images of an eye surrounded by trees.

Peter plans to return Amy to Africa, predicting it would benefit her greatly. However, facing funding issues, he's unexpectedly approached by Herkermer Homolka, who offers financial support for the expedition in exchange for a chance to explore the fabled Lost City of Zinj.

Karen decides to accompany Peter on their expedition to Africa, motivated by her desire to find Charles. Upon arrival, they meet Captain Munro Kelly, who educates them about Homolka's past failed quests to locate the mythical Lost City of Zinj.

As the team attempts to enter the jungle, their aircraft is suddenly shot down, forcing them to parachute into the dense foliage. They establish a camp, where Karen tries to set up communications with TraviCom, but playful antics between Peter and Amy lead to confusion.

A ghost tribe guides the team to the remains of a previous expedition, revealing Bob, who is alive but in a catatonic state. Attempts to revive him end in tragedy as he reacts to Amy in terror, ultimately dying from shock and leaving the team rattled.

The group finally discovers the Lost City of Zinj, just as the dormant volcano begins to stir ominously. As they explore the ruins, they face continuous horrifying occurrences, including the shocking death of Richard at the hands of a menacing gray gorilla.

Under the cover of darkness, gray gorillas assault the camp, leading to chaos. The automated defenses set up by Karen provide some protection, but the team realizes they are in a fight for their lives against the relentless creatures.

In pursuit of the diamond mine, Homolka's greed ultimately leads him to confront the gray gorillas, resulting in his gruesome demise. Meanwhile, Karen and Peter find the lifeless body of Charles holding a precious blue diamond, revealing the personal tragedy of the expedition.

Amidst the chaos, Amy showcases her bravery as she defends Peter from the attacking gray gorillas. Her protective instincts highlight the deep bond formed between her and the humans, demonstrating her courage in the face of danger.

As the team faces overwhelming odds, Karen ingeniously uses one of the diamonds to channel its energy through her laser. This strategic move allows the group to escape from the eruption of the volcano that threatens to engulf them.

Following their escape, Karen contacts Travis to relay the tragic news of Charles's death and the exploitation of the diamond. In a bid to sever ties with TraviCom, she decides to destroy their satellite, symbolizing her rejection of corporate greed as they drift away in a hot air balloon.
