In 1905, promoter Eddie Johnson heads to Coney Island to track down his longtime rival—and friend—Joe Rocco, who swindled him out of a slice of the carnival they once ran together. Eddie is intent on snagging a share in Joe’s new saloon, which features the dazzling singer Kate Farley. But when Eddie dismisses her bold, gaudy style, Joe wastes no time in ordering him off the premises.

Undeterred, Eddie convinces his loyal sidekick Frankie Frankie, who runs a sideshow with a tattooed woman, to flip the script and turn it into a Turkish Harem with dancing girls. Kate, offended by Eddie’s earlier taunts, heckles the plan, yet the revamped act takes off and draws away Joe’s customers. The more Kate learns of Eddie’s scheme, the more furious Joe becomes, and he sends his enforcers to silence the competition.

In retaliation, Eddie and Frankie stage a massive brawl inside Joe’s saloon. Amid the chaos, Finnegan, a lovable, hard-drinking character, is knocked out by Joe. The two conspirators spirit Finnegan away and float him a quick, prepaid Atlantic City vacation, then stage a fake funeral to muddy the waters. Eddie coldly convinces Joe that Finnegan is dead, and threatens to surrender him to the police unless Joe lets Eddie run the saloon and put his own mark on the business.

Reluctantly, Joe agrees, though Kate resists Eddie’s attempt to soften her flashy costumes and frantic numbers. Yet Eddie’s methods prove successful, and within weeks the saloon’s business soars, making Kate a hit. Finnegan unexpectedly reappears one afternoon, alerting Joe to the ruse, but the veteran souse decides to bide his time and wait for the right moment to strike back. As the weeks pass, Eddie and Kate fall in love, and Eddie reveals plans to open his own nightclub.

Joe grows increasingly jealous and argues with Eddie, who confesses his desire to leave with Kate. To keep Kate from slipping away, Joe engineers a clever plan: he writes to Broadway impresario William Hammerstein, who comes to hear Kate sing. Eddie and Frankie scheme to whisk her away that night, but when Kate misses her audition, Joe exposes Eddie as the architect of the deception. Crushed, Kate accompanies Joe to Hammerstein’s theater the next day to audition, but she ultimately reconciles with Eddie when he sincerely apologizes.

The lovers prepare to marry that very afternoon, yet Joe again intervenes, hiring an actor to tell Kate that Eddie has secured a bank loan for his club by using her singing as collateral. Kate is devastated, declines Eddie’s pleas, and returns to the stage. Later, Hammerstein stages a showcase for Kate, and Joe, acting as her manager, proposes marriage. Kate gently refuses, and when Eddie shows up backstage, he admits his role in the earlier ruse. Kate listens, torn between trust and heartbreak.

The show goes on, and Kate returns to her performance with renewed resolve. After the finale, Joe inadvertently signals to Eddie by admitting he’d blocked their wedding. Kate watches as Eddie is quietly admitted back into the musical fold, and the two lovers share a tender, hopeful moment. The film closes with Kate returning to the stage and singing a romantic ballad to Eddie, her gaze meeting his as the music swells and the couple quietly embraces the future together.
