Private Snafu is depicted as the armed forces’ most inept soldier, appearing in versions for each service branch. Produced as an ironic, humorous cartoon during World II, it taught service members about security, sanitation and other military topics while boosting morale. His name riffs on the slang SNAFU—“Situation Normal: All Fouled Up.”
