Gypsy Smith, a gunfighter and bounty hunter, leads a U.S. raid on a Cheyenne camp, causing a massacre that spares only child White Wolf. He places him with the Maxwell family, where he straddles Indian and white worlds and bonds with daughter Rachel. Later Gypsy guides Black settlers to found Freedom, Oklahoma’s first Black town. When White Wolf—now Corby—rejoins his people, old wounds spark conflict and a pyrrhic triumph.
