Charley Varrick and his crew rob a small local bank in Tres Cruces that isn’t insured by the FDIC. Harold Young, the reluctant bank manager, leads them into the vault as they demand the satchels containing bearer bonds. The robbery unfolds with professional precision and mounting tension as the crew pulls off the heist.

Outside the bank, deputies confront Nadine during the ensuing chaos. A firefight erupts, killing a deputy and the bank’s elderly guard, while Nadine is mortally wounded. Varrick and Harman scramble to escape with the loot and Nadine’s life hanging in the balance.

Nadine dies from her injuries as Varrick and Harman flee to a remote location. He removes Nadine’s wedding ring and places it on his own finger, sharing a quiet, emotional farewell. They rig the car with a timer and explosives before slipping away in Varrick's crop-dusting van.

Back at the trailer, they discover the haul is far larger than expected and tied to Mafia money laundering. Varrick warns Harman that the money will draw mob enforcers if they’re careless, so they decide to lay low for years. The prospect of a long pursuit tests their nerves and nerves of the partnership.

News reports identify Nadine by her dental work, prompting a drastic plan. Varrick breaks into a dentist’s office to destroy Nadine’s dental records and contemplates swapping his own and Harman’s. The move underscores how far he’ll go to erase the trail to the money.

Mafia boss Maynard Boyle dispatches Molly, a sadistic mob enforcer, to find the stolen cash. Honest John, a Chinese restaurant owner with a gambling den, provides Molly with information and a base of operations in a New Mexico brothel. Molly begins the hunt, gathering intelligence on who pulled off the robbery.

A panicked Harman is told by Varrick over a payphone that they should get forged passports. Tom, a wheelchair-bound gun shop owner, provides a contact for Jewell Everett, a photographer who makes fake documents, and they arrange to have them ready by midnight. The plan is to move the money and disappear if necessary.

Molly meets Everett at the photographer’s studio to obtain crucial information about Varrick and the money. He then confronts Tom at his gun shop to press for more details, showing relentless pursuit. Everett’s studio becomes a focal point in the mob’s investigation into the robbery.

Boyle and a district attorney contact bank manager Harold Young to uncover inside involvement. Terrified of torture and exposure, Young shoots himself in his bank office rather than cooperate. The mob’s suspicions deepen as they hunt the robbers and the hidden money.

Molly locates Varrick's trailer and brutalizes Harman to extract information about the money. Harman’s injuries prove fatal, and Molly departs, leaving Harman’s corpse behind. The raid on Harman’s fate marks a turning point in the pursuit.

Sheriff and the DA surround Varrick's trailer, but he’s gone by the time they breach. He buys explosives, a timer, and other gear, casually explaining to a shop clerk that the items are for a private project. The raid ends with no trace of him, setting the stage for a high-stakes chase.

Varrick calls Boyle’s Reno company and uses Sybil Fort, Boyle’s secretary, to broker contact. He flies his crop-duster to Reno and, through Sybil, arranges a rendezvous with Boyle at a remote junkyard. The plan is to negotiate the return of the money under controlled terms.

At the junkyard, Varrick and Boyle meet under a fragile truce while Molly watches from a distance. Molly crashes in with his car, pursuing Boyle and killing him in the ensuing chase. The encounter marks a brutal turning point as the mob loses its leverage.

Molly chases Varrick’s plane, but Varrick flips the aircraft as if trapped, feigning defeat. He offers Molly the money in a trunk in exchange for freedom, but when Molly opens the trunk he finds Harman’s corpse and the satchels. A car explodes, and Varrick appears dead, though the money remains nearby.

Varrick frees himself and opens the trunk to reveal the money. He scatters some cash around the burning car to imply destruction, then drives away in the car with the remaining money. The final image confirms he has faked his own death and escaped with a hidden fortune.
