Caved In: Prehistoric Terror

In 1948, deep within a Swiss salt mine, a team of miners unearths a swarm of giant prehistoric rhinoceros beetles, and the creatures waste no time, attacking with brutal efficiency and wiping them out in a matter of moments. The discovery is unsettling, a stark reminder of the past lurking beneath the earth.

In the present day, John Palmer, Christopher Atkins, a steady-eyed cave tour guide, is approached by Vincent, Colm Meaney, and Sophie, Monica Bîrlădeanu, with a proposal that sounds almost too daring to trust: lead a small expedition into the same salt mine in search of emeralds. What John does not realize is that this trio is not merely curious, but highly organized criminals hoping to exploit the mine’s depths for valuable stones. He agrees to the dangerous mission, and in a twist of fate, he also brings along his own family—Samantha, Angela Featherstone, Emily, Chelan Simmons, and Miles, Stevie Mitchell—who will stay in a cabin nearby with one of the thieves, Stephan, Cristian Popa.

As the group penetrates into the labyrinthine tunnels, the group dynamics begin to fray. Ion, Marius Capotă, slips away for a cigarette, a moment that soon spirals into trouble when Marcel, David Palffy, follows and a heated confrontation ensues. Marcel’s aggression culminates in a brutal shove that sends Ion over a ledge, where a beetle seizes the moment to strike. Back above ground, Miles, Stevie Mitchell, discovers the mine’s hidden entrance and slips inside alone, while Samantha notices his absence and starts a frantic search, sending Emily, Chelan Simmons, and Stephan to help.

Inside the mine, tension rises as John attempts to steer the group toward exit routes, but Marcel overrides him, tightening control and signaling Stephan to watch over Samantha and Emily with a threatening hand. When Stephan moves to seize Emily, Samantha steps in and knocks him out, a brief act of courage that buys a momentary calm. Yet the real danger has only begun. The beetles ambush the explorers with relentless ferocity, and Carlo, Vlad Jipa, falls to their onslaught. The survivors turn defensive, fending off the swarm with a combination of gunfire and quick thinking, but a sudden cave-in cracks the forest floor above ground and sends beetles pouring toward the cabin where Samantha and Emily have been coordinating.

With the cabin under siege, Samantha tries to reach John on the walkie-talkie, but the signal falters. Deciding to act, she and Emily take up a pistol and head for the surface, only to be knocked unconscious by Stephan as he resumes his grim duties. The internal conflict continues to erupt: Marcel and Vincent clash over the emeralds and their fate, and the volatile situation erupts into gunfire that leaves Vincent dead and the group more divided than ever. The beetles press their assault, and Marcel, driven by fear of prison, makes a fatal miscalculation that leads to his own gruesome end, torn apart by a developing swarm.

In the deeper tunnels, John, Sophie, and Miles are forced to press on, aided by Hanz, Marius Chivu, who holds off beetles with grit and stubborn resolve as the trio closes in on an exit route. Marcel’s pursuit of the emeralds reaches a fever pitch, and in a cruel twist he fatally shoots Hanz before a beetle afflicts him with a brutal fate, tearing him apart as the remaining survivors push forward. The queen beetle looms as a brutal guardian of the final way out, blocking their path and testing every ounce of resolve.

On the surface, Samantha and Emily are still under threat, and the group’s attempts to communicate become a key clue. Emily’s call to John negotiates a fragile link as the queen’s pain ripples through the swarm, drawing the beetles away from the cabin and toward the mine’s mouth. John, Miles, and Sophie seize the moment, setting charges to collapse the mine and prevent any chance of escape for their pursuers. They sprint for the safety of the daylight, explosive charges detonating behind them and the cavern’s collapse sealing the fate of their pursuers.

When the dust settles, the trio emerges into the open air with a hard-won sense of relief. Sophia, now sharing the emeralds with the survivors, passes a portion to John, while taking a share for herself, and the reunited family finally steps away from the mine. The cave’s darkness recedes, but the memory of the treachery, the peril, and the peril’s cost lingers, a stark reminder that some secrets buried beneath the earth are better left undisturbed.
