Philo Vance, an agent in Vienna, probes if aircraft designer Archer Coe is selling plans abroad. He grabs signed blueprints, is caught and deported. Back in America Coe is found dead in a locked bedroom, a gun in his hand. Vance sees gunshot, blunt‑force and stab wounds, rejects suicide, and investigates the espionage murder.
