In the 1960s, a pair of eagles in the Alps welcome two eaglets into the world. Tragically, the mother eagle realizes that she can only raise one to be her successor, setting the stage for the difficult choices ahead.

The eaglets' father meets a tragic end when a rival eagle attacks, causing him to plummet to his death. This loss leaves a profound impact on the surviving eaglet and sets up a tumultuous journey ahead.

In a nearby forest, young Lukas and his father Keller struggle to adjust after the death of Maria, their beloved family member who died in a fire. The emotional distance between Keller and Lukas grows, as both deal with their grief in different ways.

While wandering with his dog Scout, Lukas discovers an injured eaglet. Feeling a deep connection and empathy for the creature, he resolves to care for it at the ruins of their old home, fostering their bond.

Forester Danzer learns about the eaglet's plight and steps in to help Lukas. He shares his knowledge about proper nutrition and care, supporting the young boy as he embarks on the journey of nurturing the eaglet back to health.

As tension rises at home with Keller's frustrations over a fox attacking his chickens, Lukas finds solace while reading the family Bible. Inspired by the story of Cain and Abel, he names the eaglet Abel, symbolizing hope amidst turmoil.

Danzer invites Lukas to spend the summer in the mountains, allowing Abel to accompany them. Lukas's excitement grows as he takes on the responsibility of feeding and training the eaglet.

As weeks pass, Abel flourishes under Lukas's care, eventually taking his first flights. However, Lukas is overwhelmed with emotions when Abel suddenly disappears, leaving him heartbroken and longing for his friend.

After a period of separation, Abel returns to Lukas, who is eager to train him for survival. Tensions flare between Danzer and Keller as they disagree on training techniques, showcasing the differences in their ideologies.

As winter approaches, Lukas creates a small memorial for Abel, displaying his loyalty and love for the eaglet. In a chance encounter, he faces danger from a wolf but is saved by Danzer, highlighting the ongoing threats in their lives.

Tensions boil over when Lukas confronts his father Keller about their traumatic past. In a moment of desperation, he flees into the mountains, seeking solace and connection with Abel, while an impending rockslide complicates his journey.

Two years later, Lukas and Keller are reunited, albeit under strained circumstances. While searching for closure, Lukas believes he senses Abel's presence, but discovers a dead eagle, mistakenly thought to belong to Abel.

In a miracle of fate, Abel reappears to Lukas after he confronts his father's past. The reunion brings joy and closure to Lukas, as he remembers the journey they have shared and the bond they still possess.

Acknowledging the inevitability of nature's cycle, Lukas removes the bracelet he made for Abel, allowing him to soar high into the sky. This bittersweet moment signifies Lukas's acceptance of change and the continuation of life.

As Abel flies away, he is joined by a female eagle, symbolizing the continuation of the legacy created by Lukas and the eagles. Danzer witnesses this moment, solidifying the themes of growth, freedom, and the eternal cycle of life.
