Breathless

Michel Poiccard idolizes American movie gangsters, especially Humphrey Bogart, shaping his self-image as a daring outlaw. This fantasy fuels his impulsive decisions and disdain for authority. It frames his later choices as he moves through life in Paris.

Michel steals a car in Marseille and heads for Paris. On the road, he is pursued by a motorcycle cop who tries to arrest him. In a reckless act, Michel shoots and kills the officer and continues fleeing.

Michel arrives in Paris and seeks out Patricia Franchini, an American student and aspiring journalist who sells the New York Herald Tribune on the streets. He is romantically obsessed with her and tries to convince her to run away with him to Italy. This arrival marks his entry into her world and sets the plot in motion.
