In vibrant Arizona, Dignan concocts a detailed scheme to rescue his friend Anthony. The plan includes a 75-year outline of heists aimed at meeting the enigmatic Mr. Henry, a local landscaper with a criminal edge.

Dignan and Anthony practice their heist skills by breaking into Anthony's family home. They follow a pre-arranged list of items to steal, which leads to a tense revelation when Dignan admits to taking earrings not on the list.

The theft of the earrings becomes a major point of contention when Anthony reveals their sentimental value as a gift for his mother. In a gesture to make amends, Anthony asks his sister to return the earrings, attempting to salvage their friendship.

Dignan recruits Bob Mapplethorpe as their getaway driver mainly for his car. The trio discusses their next heist, planning to target a local bookstore, albeit with Dignan struggling to communicate his elaborate strategies.

The group successfully robs the bookstore, netting a modest amount of cash. Following their heist, they go 'on the lam' and settle into a motel, where Anthony's romantic encounter with Inez begins amidst language barriers.

Tragedy strikes when Bob discovers that the police have found his marijuana crop. He abruptly departs to help his brother, leaving Anthony with Dignan and an envelope that contains most of their heist money.

As Dignan delivers the envelope to Inez, she embraces him, blissfully unaware of its contents. However, a friend later rushes to inform Dignan that Inez has feelings for Anthony, which he fails to communicate.

After a series of misadventures, Dignan discovers a dilapidated yet functional Alfa Romeo Spider. He and Anthony work together to reignite their expansive plan, yet tension begins to build between the two friends.

The escalating stress from Dignan’s misplaced envelope and other complications fuels an argument between Anthony and Dignan. Ultimately, the friends decide to part ways as their once-promising partnership unravels.

In a reflective letter to his sister, Anthony conveys that he and Bob have returned to their ordinary lives. Meanwhile, Dignan, now part of Mr. Henry's gang, seeks to reconcile with Anthony.

Dignan meets Mr. Henry, who becomes a mentor figure, bolstering the duo’s confidence as they prepare for a heist at a cold storage facility. This encounter strengthens their bonds and elevates the stakes of their plans.

During the significant heist, things spiral out of control as unexpected medical emergencies and misfires occur. The meticulously crafted plan collapses, leaving Dignan in a precarious situation.

As tensions rise, Dignan finds himself locked out of the escape van, suffering police brutality. His chaotic situation highlights the fragility of their plans and the consequences of their reckless actions.

Anthony and Bob arrive at the scene only to discover that Mr. Henry has been robbing Bob's house the entire time. This shocking turn reveals the complications that went unnoticed and deepens the sense of betrayal.

As they part ways, Dignan attempts to hold onto his bravado and outlines yet another escape plan. He leaves them with a final quip, highlighting the irony of their situations, as he heads back to the struggles of imprisonment.
