In 1985, a young boy named Bosco, portrayed in his adulthood by Quawntay Adams, receives stern advice from his father about navigating life on the streets. Years later, Bosco finds himself imprisoned in a maximum-security facility, facing a staggering 35-year sentence due to a marijuana charge. The film primarily unfolds within the somber confines of his prison cell, where Bosco struggles against the unforgiving environment while attempting to keep his mental state intact.

The atmosphere is dominated by the sadistic prison warden, Hunt, and his malevolent right-hand officer, Ramos, both of whom take delight in degrading the inmates and exploiting their vulnerable positions. Through a series of poignant flashbacks, we gain insight into Bosco’s upbringing; his mother fought desperately to shield him from the negative influences of his father’s criminal lifestyle.

As Bosco grapples with the brutality of prison life, a flicker of hope emerges upon learning from a prison visit that his girlfriend, Tammy, is pregnant. Fueled by this revelation, he devises an escape plan involving Tammy, who initially encouraged him to reach out by placing a Lonely Hearts ad in the newspaper. This idea is bolstered by insights from his cellmate, Bull, who discovered the ad and spurred Bosco to make contact with her.

Over time, Tammy becomes increasingly invested in Bosco’s plight and ultimately agrees to assist him in his daring escape. However, the journey is riddled with challenges. Eventually, Bosco uncovers a potential exit through a ventilation shaft leading to freedom. As he prepares for this risky endeavor, Ramos uncovers a stolen ultrasound picture of Bosco’s unborn child, pilfered by Hunt. In a surprising display of empathy, Ramos returns the photo, marking a rare moment of compassion. Yet, when he visits Bosco’s cell, he finds that Bosco is on the verge of his escape.

Ramos offers Bosco information about Hunt’s unexpected absence from work, leaving the reasons for his departure shrouded in mystery. Realizing Bosco’s imminent escape, Ramos triggers an alarm. Meanwhile, Tammy falters at the motel where they plan to meet, hesitating to escape with Bosco. After a brief moment of panic, she decides to join him, and together they hit the road.

At a dilapidated motel, Bosco and Tammy confront the reality of their uncertain future. Bosco, realizing the ramifications of life on the run for their family, urges Tammy to return home and clarify that she picked him up under false pretenses. However, as soon as she arrives back home, the police are waiting for her.

In a pivotal moment, to avoid conflict, Bosco chooses to remain in the motel room as law enforcement closes in. Through a reflective voiceover, he articulates a profound truth: true freedom is not simply about fleeing but finding purpose in one’s life.

The film concludes with a moving epilogue featuring actual footage of Quawntay Adams, the inspiration behind Bosco. He shares the powerful news of his release in 2020 after serving 16 years. Since gaining his freedom, Bosco has committed himself to positively impacting his community and assisting his fellow inmates, all while ensuring his daughter has better opportunities than he did.
