Kikuji, the heir of an Osaka merchant clan that values matrilineal succession, is pressured by his domineering mother and grandmother to produce a daughter to inherit the family business. When his wife is expelled for bearing a son, he turns to a reckless life of indulgence, yet his mistresses also fail to give him a daughter, leaving him exhausted and indifferent.
