Amelia Rodrigues, celebrated fadista, debuts in Capas Negras, named for Coimbra students’ black capes. The film opens in a tavern where former students reminisce; Jose Duarte sings a Coimbra fado, answered by Maria Lisboa’s Lisbon‑type fado. Their rivalry sparks a thwarted romance, turning the soundtrack into a duel of the two fado traditions.
