On April 8 2003 Karsten Heuer and Leanne Allison left Old Crow, Yukon, to join the Porcupine Caribou Herd’s migration. For five months they trekked on foot with the 123,000‑member herd, covering about 1,500 km across tundra between the herd’s winter range and the calving grounds in Alaska’s Arctic Refuge, finishing round‑trip on September 8 2003.
