Behold My Wife!

Michael Carter, Gene Raymond, a young New York socialite, staggers home drunk and declares that he intends to marry Mary White the very next day. The butler alerts his parents, and the next morning, his sister Diana Carter-Curson, Juliette Compton, visits Mary’s apartment and ends the relationship by labeling Mary a disgrace in the eyes of the family. Diana tells Mary that Michael has gone to France and that his pattern is to fall in love with women, promise to wed them, and then abandon them—often described as leaving them “at the church.” Mary struggles to believe the charges, but the family’s warnings echo over the phone, as Michael’s butler confirms the rumors. Diana then presents Mary with a check and a ticket to California, exiting triumphantly. Just as she prepares to relish her supposed victory, a scream shatters the scene and Mary’s lifeless body lies in the street below—an event that prompts Diana to scramble and try to explain away what happened, while Michael, upon learning the news, vows vengeance.

In his grief and anger, Michael escapes to the West, slipping from bar to bar and trying to drown the hurt in liquor. At one tavern, he befriends an intoxicated Apache man named Pete, [Dean Jagger], whose girlfriend is the Apache Tonita, Tonita, Sylvia Sidney. A tense moment leads to an armed confrontation during which Pete accidentally shoots Michael in the shoulder. Tonita’s instinct is to protect her companion, and Michael, recognizing a way to strike back at his prejudiced family, asks Tonita to marry him as a calculated alliance that would force his kin to confront a non-traditional match.

The Carter clan gathers for a grand reception to celebrate the rumored union, and the house buzzes with anticipation and scrutiny. Diana gleefully orchestrates appearances, prompting Tonita to wear a lavish night dress that allows her to answer impertinent questions with grace and wit, a sharp contrast to Michael’s desire to parade Tonita in her native Apache attire to humiliate his relatives. The pair’s dynamic reveals simmering tension—Tonita’s poise clashes with Michael’s mounting fury as he senses his family’s triumph slipping away. In a moment of rebellion, Tonita leaves with Bob Prentice, Bob Prentice, Monroe Owsley, who is Diana’s lover, prompting a chase that ends with Diana following them to Prentice’s apartment.

A jealous Diana pulls the strings of danger, and she weaponizes her own jealousy by shooting Prentice when he spurns her. Tonita volunteers to take the blame, feeling there is no real reason for her to live if it means denying Michael the chance to settle his score with his family. Michael arrives at Prentice’s apartment, finds the body, and concocts a false confession to protect himself. Yet at the police station, Tonita reveals the truth: she killed Prentice to spare Michael. The authorities have been listening in on Tonita’s confession, preparing to uncover the layers of deception. In the end, the married couple realize they can forge a life together—if they can navigate the legacy of their families and the secrets that threatened to pull them apart, now that the truth has surfaced and the path forward is theirs to choose.
