Baler

Celso Resurrección, a Spanish mestizo, enlists in the Spanish Army with hopes of being sent to Spain after the war to search for his father. He meets Feliza Reyes, the daughter of a Katipunero, and a secret romance begins amid the looming conflict. The garrison at Baler is isolated as the shelling and rumor of defeat spread.

Filipino forces attack the garrison and the Spaniards retreat to the church, taking shelter inside. Padre Candido Gómez Carreño joins them, while Gabriel, Feliza's brother, stays on as sacristan to help the defenders. Celso recognizes Gabriel and urges him to leave for safety, but Gabriel insists his Christian duty is to stay.

Weeks turn into months as the siege drags on and the Spaniards press for surrender with hollow promises of safe conduct. The oppressive heat spoils their food, and they risk venturing out at night to forage for whatever they can find. The small numbers and dwindling supplies gnaw at morale inside the church.

One night Morenas orders Celso and another soldier on a foray to burn nearby houses to distract the Filipinos and show their spirits are unbroken. Celso seizes the chance to glimpse Feliza, who hands him food from the town fiesta as a ploy to tempt the Spaniards into surrender. The ruse highlights how desperate both sides have become.

Filipinos grant an hour-long truce so Padre Gómez can say Mass outside the church for the garrison. The ceremony is cut short when Gómez dies before finishing the Mass, and the truce ends as soldiers bring him back inside. The moment marks a turning point in the morale of both sides.

Gabriel is finally convinced to leave the church; his family rushes to greet him, while his father Daniel breaks down and embraces him. The departure weakens the defenders but underscores the human cost of the siege. The sacristan's exit signals a shift in who remains to defend the church.

A ceasefire is held on Christmas, offering a fragile lull in the siege. The defenders rest with cautious hope that relief might come, even as the supply situation remains dire. The surrounding town adapts to the quiet, knowing danger could return at any moment.

Morenas dies of beriberi, and Lt. Saturnino Martín Cerezo takes command of the garrison. With new leadership, the isolation continues but the mounting hardships press the men toward potential escape. The change in command reshapes the dynamics within the church walls.

Filipinos leave newspapers on the church steps reporting Spain's defeat and the end of colonial rule, while Spanish nationals unsuccessfully try to sway Martín. His soldiers stay loyal despite the deteriorating conditions and the overwhelming odds. The semblance of victory in a conquered land does little to lift spirits.

That night the Spaniards hear gunshots and celebrate as if Americans were invading, only to face the reality that the Philippine–American War has begun. The Filipinos, however, manage to repel the American forces, keeping the siege from ending quickly. The conflicting news compounds the confusion and fatigue inside the garrison.

As morale continues to sink, some soldiers plan to desert; Celso learns Feliza is pregnant, a revelation that deepens his personal conflict. He will later learn she has given birth to a son who she names Celso, tying their fate to the ongoing siege. The personal stakes mingle with the political collapse around them.

On the night of the desertion, six soldiers attempt to slip away while others sleep. Mauro confronts Celso and accuses him of aiding the escape, and Celso is fatally shot on Martín's orders. The act seals the collapse of any remaining cohesion within the garrison.

The next day Martín reads an article about a close friend's posting and becomes convinced the newspapers are true and that Spain has lost. He orders his men to surrender to the Filipinos, ending their resistance. Feliza searches the church and discovers Celso's body resting in the baptistry, mourning his loss.

A few years after the siege, Feliza is shown raising Celso Jr., while an American soldier compliments the boy. The final image ties the tragedy of the siege to a future family life and the lingering memory of those who did not survive.
