Azumi

Azumi is a gripping tale that follows the life of a young female assassin, diving deep into her world and the tumultuous events following the Battle of Sekigahara. The story unfolds with Azumi embarking on her assignments amidst a backdrop of rising conflict, where she is tasked with eliminating key supporters and generals of the Toyotomi clan—an order from Tokugawa Ieyasu, who anticipates renewed warfare. The narrative cleverly hints that many of the Toyotomi leaders who died from misfortunes were actually victims of Azumi and her peers’ covert operations, thus placing the reader squarely within this pivotal time in history.

Raised in isolation by an elder known as Jiji, or Gensai Obata, Azumi stands out as the only female among ten selected students. Their secluded training within the misty confines of Kiridani (Fog Valley) strips them of fundamental societal understandings, leaving them oblivious to the distinctions of gender and the customs surrounding life events. During their training, Azumi and her companions are sent to the hidden community of Shimotani to discover the foundational aspects of ninjutsu. This somber initiation sets an ominous tone for the narrative ahead.

As the story progresses, each of the ten ‘erabareta senshi’ (chosen warriors) is thrown into a brutal reality when Jiji reveals that their first mission is to eliminate their partner, a test of resolve. Azumi’s choice is Nachi, and the resulting confrontation leaves her emotionally scarred despite her stoic exterior. Their second critical mission demands the massacre of an entire peaceful ninja village—an act that forces Azumi to confront the harrowing nature of her assignments as she hesitates before taking the life of a mother with a child.

With the remaining warriors, Azumi embarks on successive assassination missions, targeting essential figures from the Toyotomi camp.
