New doctor arrives at a provincial mental institution, intrigued by a patient convinced he is Yakov Yurovsky, the executioner of the Romanovs. Their conversations reveal the patient’s philosophical, suggestive mind, drawing the doctor into vivid recollections of the night of June 16‑17 1918 when Nicholas II, his wife, daughters and heir were murdered. The doctor comes to see his own obsession with the past reflected in the patient’s delusion.
