Zara, a discontented bar entertainer and alcoholic living with novelist Carl Salter, is suddenly claimed by Tony to be Maria, the missing wife of his friend Bruno, whose memory was supposedly erased in World War I. Confused, Zara leaves with Tony. Bruno, now an Italian army officer, tries to restore Maria’s memories on his estate, while Salter brings a woman from Trieste he claims is the real Maria, prompting a desperate search for the truth.
