In the breathtaking wilderness of the Venezuelan tepui, British entomologist James Atherton makes a groundbreaking discovery. Capturing two unique specimens of prehistoric spiders, he notes their lack of sex organs, indicating a hive-like society that is extraordinary among arachnids.

James Atherton's discovery takes a deadly turn when one of the spiders bites Jerry Manley, a bedridden American nature photographer. The venom from the spider leads to Manley's tragic death due to a severe seizure, marking the beginning of a terrifying chain of events.

After Jerry Manley's death, his body is transported back to his hometown, Canaima. The local mortuary, run by Irv Kendall, unknowingly becomes the first battleground for the dangerous spiders, as one makes its way into the coffin before escaping into the town.

The escaped spider infects a crow that later dies near the barn of Ross Jennings, the town’s new family physician. This event sets off a catastrophic series of attacks as the lethargic offspring of the spiders begin to reproduce and threaten the local ecosystem.

The tranquility of Canaima is shattered when Margaret Hollins suddenly dies, raising suspicions about the heart attack diagnosis provided by Dr. Sam Metcalf. Soon after, high school football player Todd Miller also dies following an examination, leading to Ross Jennings being dubbed 'Dr. Death' by the townsfolk.

Dr. Sam Metcalf, the physician who dismissed the earlier cases, becomes a victim himself, collapsing and dying in front of his wife. This shocking event sends shockwaves through the small town, prompting Ross to seek answers about the mysterious afflictions plaguing their community.

In a desperate bid to uncover the truth, Ross seeks the help of entomologist James Atherton, who sends his assistant Chris Collins to assist in the investigation. They exhume the recently deceased bodies of Margaret and Todd, discovering undeniable evidence of spider bites.

While investigating the victims' backgrounds, Chris and Ross discover two specimens of the lethal spider in Metcalf’s residence. One spider is dead from natural causes, further solidifying their fears about the horrifying new species threatening the community.

With Atherton’s guidance, Ross learns that the spiders are soldiers led by a commanding general, and that their catastrophic breeding is a plan to ensure survival and establish dominance. This revelation highlights the urgent need to confront the arachnids before they evolve beyond their control.

The harsh reality hits home as Ross, Chris, and exterminator Delbert McClintock find one of the nests established within Ross's own barn. This discovery forces them to rally together and develop a plan to exterminate the impending threat before it spreads further.

Tragedy strikes when Atherton, while trying to capture the general, is bitten by one of the male spiders and succumbs to its venom. His loss deepens the urgency of the situation and motivates Ross, who must now tackle the threat without his expert ally.

As the chaos escalates, Ross confronts the queen spider in his barn and successfully electrocutes it. However, he faces a daunting battle against the general while his own life hangs in the balance after falling into the cellar, where another nest lies.

In a climactic turn of events, Ross utilizes his nail gun to incinerate the general spider, successfully immobilizing it. The townspeople's relentless fight against the arachnids finally culminates in the destruction of the egg sac and the remaining nests, ensuring their extinction.

Having vanquished the threat, the Jennings family decides to leave Canaima behind, reflecting on their harrowing experience. Just as they prepare to depart, an earthquake strikes San Francisco, reminding them of the unpredictability of life and the importance of their newfound safety.
