The book behind the movie

Appleseed Book 1: The Promethean Challenge

by Masamune Shirow, Dana Lewis, Toren Smith

Kazuyoshi Katayama's original video animation uses Shirow's postwar Olympus, police officer Deunan Knute, cyborg Briareos, bioroids, and the tension between human survivors and a managed utopia. It selects and changes conflicts from the early manga, centering a terrorist plot involving A.J. Sebastian and an armored mobile fortress rather than reproducing the volume's political struggle, Gaia debate, and constitutional detail. Character designs, technology, institutional setting, and the question of whether engineered stability can remain humane come from The Promethean Challenge, but the eighty-minute action narrative is substantially rebuilt.
