Prasanna engages in revolutionary acts against his father's wishes. He explains that rising rice prices forced him to steal rice from a lorry, distribute it to the poor, and even set the lorry on fire. When the police arrive, Mahendran helps arrest him, widening the rift between father and son.

After his release, Prasanna chooses to stay away from his hometown and travels to Madras. This marks the start of a new life away from his father's influence. The distance fuels his emotional and political detachment.

Prasanna is beaten for insulting passengers of a car that splashed water on him. Carnatic singer Bhairavi finds him unconscious on the roadside and takes him home. Her doctor friend Suri treats his injuries, setting the stage for his stay at Bhairavi's house.

After he recovers, Bhairavi asks him to continue living in her house. Over time, Prasanna develops romantic feelings for her, even though she is much older. He begins to envision a future with her, despite the age gap.

Before Prasanna arrives, Bhairavi's daughter Ranjani learns she was adopted and is actually Bhairavi's biological daughter. She runs away from home and meets Mahendran in Bangalore while trying to sell some items. He offers hospitality and expresses a desire to marry her, despite the age difference.

Bhairavi and Mahendran reject Prasanna and Ranjani's proposals at first because of age differences and other issues. However, through perseverance, the two couples are persuaded that their marriages could work. The families begin to consider a union despite initial misgivings.

Prasanna ends his revolutionary activities to pursue music for Bhairavi's sake. He becomes a mridangam player, symbolizing his commitment to the relationship. Bhairavi is forced to accept his proposal as a result.

Pandiyan, Bhairavi's ex-lover and Ranjani's father, appears to meet her and apologize. Prasanna intercedes and takes him for treatment at his place, while discussing their plans to marry Bhairavi. Pandiyan agrees not to interfere, but his health worsens and he dies shortly thereafter.

Mahendran sees Bhairavi's advertisement for her missing daughter and notices Prasanna's photo, realizing they are in love. He responds by advertising for his own missing son, adding to the tangled family dynamics. The parallel searches for loved ones heighten the emotional stakes.

Bhairavi seeks Prasanna's father's consent before marrying her. They meet Mahendran, who introduces Ranjani as Prasanna's future mother since she is his future wife, presenting a cryptic riddle about how the families' roles will resolve. The dialogue deepens the comic yet complex intertwining of relations.

During Bhairavi's next katcheri, she sings a challenging line that prompts Ranjani to join her mother on stage. Observing this, Prasanna also changes his mind and joins his father. The performance becomes a turning point that reconciles generations and affections.

Pandiyan sends a note to Bhairavi in the middle of the katcheri, wishing her well with Prasanna. After the performance, Bhairavi finds him dead with the note in his hand and erases kumkuma to declare herself a widow. She leaves with Ranjani, while Prasanna joins Mahendran.
