After completing long‑term military service, friends Jan Cimbura of Semic and Josef Piksa of Putim return home. Piksa farms his own land, while Cimbura works for the Hradiště farmer‑mayor Kovanda. Cimbura is strong, diligent, abstinent and watches Marjánka, whom he loves. He refuses marriage, wanting first to gain independence, a goal that may take years.
