Amos

Amos and his wife share a quiet breakfast before heading out on a road trip. A sudden accident on the highway kills his wife and severely injures Amos, shattering their plans for the day. The crash sets off a chain of consequences that frames the rest of the story.

Amos regains consciousness in a hospital bed and learns his wife did not survive the crash. He also discovers that their home has already been sold, leaving him suddenly dispossessed. The revelation deepens his grief and sense of vulnerability.

Daisy Daws governs the facility with relentless rules and little mercy, earning the residents' fear. Her affair with the Sheriff protects her position, while a County Commissioner is fed flattering reports about the home. One night, Daisy administers an overdose of barbiturates to Amos's roommate while he pretends to sleep. Amos witnesses the act and is left powerless to intervene. The room's quiet, grim moment reveals the depth of Daisy's control.

After the body's removal, Amos questions Daisy about the death and she threatens him unless he puts his life insurance policy in her name. Her coercive power over him marks a dangerous turn in the relationship. The threat underscores the danger inside the home.
