In the summer of 1907, mouse Abel and his wife are enjoying a picnic when a fierce rainstorm drifts them apart. Abel lands on a river island, unable to swim against the strong current. He repeatedly tries to leave—riding a leaf, rowing a makeshift boat, and other contraptions—while carving sculptures to give his exile purpose. His ultimate aim remains to escape and reunite with his wife in the city.
