Thomas “Tom” Rosner, played by John Stamos, is a highly successful divorce lawyer known for his charm and professional accomplishments. Despite his career achievements, Tom remains unmarried, which is a source of deep sadness for his elderly mother, Helen Rosner. Helen, portrayed with warmth and resilience, is currently in remission from cancer, and her main hope is for her son to find happiness and companionship.

The story unfolds as Helen visits the hospital for a routine check-up, where she encounters Jane Cronin, a compassionate and intelligent nurse played by Kelly Rowan. Jane is a single woman, still recovering emotionally from a five-year relationship that recently ended. Helen quickly becomes captivated by Jane’s beauty, wit, and caring nature, and she immediately begins to believe that Jane could be the perfect match for Tom. Her enthusiasm for matchmaking is evident, although her longtime caretaker, Katie Beale, voiced by Della Reese, is less convinced and sometimes frustrated by Helen’s meddling.

Despite initial hesitation, Tom and Jane agree to go out on a date mainly to humor Helen. Tom mistakenly tells his mother that Jane is attracted to him, which leads Helen to think that the date was a success. However, Jane, feeling misunderstood, describes the outing as “the worst social experience since the dawn of man.” Not willing to give up so easily, Helen persuades Jane to see Tom again. Their second date is a success, and there’s tentative hope that a relationship might develop.

Yet, Tom is unsure about committing emotionally. He is afraid that he isn’t the type of man Jane is looking for, which causes him to hold back. Helen, desperate for her son to settle down, employs a bit of jealousy to nudge Tom toward making a move. Just as their relationship begins to deepen, Helen receives devastating news—her cancer has returned. This revelation intensifies her desire for Tom to find happiness with Jane before it’s too late, although it frustrates Katie, who feels Helen’s meddling is preventing Tom from living his own life.

Amidst all these emotional struggles, Tom begins to spiral into depression. One night, he goes out drinking and is persuaded onto the dance floor by a woman he meets there, who then convinces him to take her home, even though Tom feels uncomfortable about it. The next day, Jane leaves him heartfelt messages, worried about his well-being, and when she unexpectedly shows up, she encounters the woman and quickly leaves in distress. Tom, feeling lost and hurt, becomes withdrawn, struggling with both his mother’s illness and his own fears.

As Helen’s health worsens, she recognizes that her time is limited and that she won’t be able to look after her son forever. Jane temporarily distances herself from the family, but once she sees how much Helen needs support, she offers her help despite Helen’s initial refusal to hear Tom out. Their relationship is tense, strained by grief and fear.

The climax occurs at Helen’s funeral, a poignant moment that underscores the depth of their emotional bonds. Tom attempts to speak with Jane, but she is soon whisked away by her companion. That same day, overwhelmed by despair, Tom steps into the street without looking and is tragically hit by a car. Katie immediately contacts Jane, who rushes to his side, relieved to find him alive. In a touching moment of vulnerability, Tom finally apologizes and boldly declares his love for Jane.

The story concludes with their wedding day, a joyful celebration where Helen’s spirit seems to watch happily from afar, delighted to see her son found happiness. Through love, loss, and perseverance, the characters learn the true value of connection and the importance of cherishing every moment with those who matter most.
