The whole story of A Guy Named Joe (1943) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Pete Sandidge is a daring, reckless North American B-25 Mitchell pilot who operates out of England during World War II. He is deeply in love with Dorinda Durston, an American civilian ferry pilot for the Air Transport Auxiliary who flies aircraft all over the United Kingdom. His commanding officer, Nails Kilpatrick, first transfers him and his crew to a base in Scotland, then proposes sending him back to the United States to become a flight instructor. Dorinda begs him to accept, and he agrees, before they set off on one last mission together with his best friend, Al Yackey, to scout a German aircraft carrier.

During the mission, Pete is wounded after an attack by an enemy fighter. He orders his crew to parachute from the plane before he bombs the carrier and crashes into the sea, a selfless act that leaves him at the mercy of the elements.

Pete awakens in a strange, cloud-filled realm where he first encounters his old friend Dick Rumney. Dick guides him to a meeting with "The General," who assigns him a mission that stretches the boundaries between life and afterlife. Pete is sent back to Earth, with the understanding that a year has passed, to relay what he has learned to Lockheed P-38 Lightning pilot Ted Randall at a flight school in the South Pacific. Ted’s commanding officer, Al Yackey, becomes a key link in this celestial briefing. Ted soon meets Dorinda again, now a ferry pilot with the Women Airforce Service Pilots in New Guinea, and the two gradually fall in love. Ted proposes, and Dorinda accepts, much to Pete’s uneasy jealousy.

As the story unfolds, Dorinda learns from Al that Ted has been given an extremely dangerous assignment: to destroy the largest Japanese ammunition dump in the Pacific. In a bold turn, she steals Ted’s aircraft and sets out to complete the mission. Pete guides her through the perilous operation to its successful conclusion, and, in the end, he accepts his fate and recognizes that his mission is fulfilled.
