Nello Tarth, a poor orphan living with his grandfather Jehan near Antwerp, delivers milk and finds Patrash, a mistreated working dog. He nurses the animal back to health, forming a bond. Inspired by Rubens, Nello’s passion for drawing is scorned by villagers, especially Alois’s father, who calls art impractical. Nello strives to become an artist and earn respect.
