The Pied Piper

A quiet dawn unfolds over Hamelin, where a hidden mechanism hums to life and the sun begins its daily rise. The town is painted with a pale, sharp edge of avarice and pretension: money and rank crowd out kindness, and waste runs rampant among the wealthy and the petty alike. That same waste seeds a nightmare—an enormous rat infestation that slips through the streets at night, stealing food and valuables and sowing fear when dawn arrives. A tall, hooded figure watches from the outskirts before stepping into the city, becoming the first sign that balance may be tipping.

When the leaders convene to face the crisis, the mysterious piper emerges and demonstrates a haunting power: with the cadence of his music, he can lure the vermin to their deaths. The town, hungry for relief and anchored by a history of indulgence, offers him a fortune—1000 gold coins—if he can rid them of the rats. The piper agrees, and a silent procession begins: he leads the swarming rats away, drawing them through the streets with a haunting melody until they plunge to a cliff and vanish into a lake. In this moment, a substory unfolds around a jeweler among the elite who tries to pursue a woman in her home. The woman, the only character who appears untouched by grotesque distortion, refuses him, and the piper’s music interrupts the jeweler’s advances. A second, darker turn is indicated when the jeweler, now facing the piper’s intervention, retreats in fear as the rats disappear.

After the immediate crisis of the infestation, the piper returns to demand payment. The town’s leaders, meanwhile, gather at a table filled with gluttony—wine, food, and veiled tales of rejection among the same circle that included the jeweler—yet they offer only a single black button. The piper leaves, anger simmering beneath his calm exterior. That night, the jeweler and his drunken friends break into the woman’s home as she prays, and the assault and murder that follow are implied rather than shown. The piper arrives too late to save her, and all that remains is a quiet, horrifying stillness.

With resolve that borders on rumor and myth, the piper climbs to the highest tower, where the city’s sun machinery sits and where Saturn—the god of time personified—guards an hourglass. A silent exchange between the piper and Saturn sets in motion a fateful decision: when the last grain of sand falls, the sun’s gears stop turning, plunging the town into a day that never ends. The piper plays once more, and as his tune echoes through the streets, the citizens transform into rats and follow his tune to the tower’s edge, leaping to the same fate that befell the vermin earlier. The last to vanish is the transformed jeweler, his guilt fully manifest in a final, inexorable fall.

Only one figure remains: an old fisherman who had watched the city from a distance. As the piper’s presence dissolves, his cloak becomes a hollow shell and then vanishes into the wind. The fisherman approaches the empty streets and finds the sole survivor—the baby who remains uncorrupted. With a heavy sense of duty, he takes the child away, leaving behind a town that lies quiet and abandoned, its gears finally silent, its daylight erased, and its stories folded into legend.

In this dreamlike, morally charged tale, the film blends stark, grotesque imagery with a delicate, almost painterly interlude—the moment on the bench where the piper’s music and a shift in visual style meet in a rare, luminous sequence of paint-on-wood animation. It remains a meditation on greed, punishment, and the fragile line between salvation and damnation, told through a fable that invites reflection long after the last note fades.
