What Happens at the End of Him?
How Him (2021) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.
The climactic finale of Him serves as a violent rejection of a predatory system, transforming the film from a sports drama into a bloody allegory for agency and self-determination. Throughout the story, the protagonist, Cam, is groomed to replace the legendary quarterback Isaiah, but the finale reveals that this succession is a trap. He is not merely being prepared as an athlete; he is being cultivated as a sacrificial asset for a cabal of wealthy team owners who treat players as disposable commodities. When presented with the contract that would seal his fate, Cam chooses survival over glory. In a brutal subversion of the sports movie trope, he refuses to "sign his life away," instead turning the violence of the game back onto his oppressors by dispatching the trainer and the owners.
This act of rebellion stands in stark contrast to the philosophy of Isaiah, the aging "GOAT." Isaiah has long embraced a worldview where greatness justifies any sacrifice, including the loss of one’s humanity. He has sustained himself on the adoration of crowds and the power of his status, even passing his blood to Cam in a dark ritual reminiscent of ancient hunters consuming the strength of their elders. When Cam fights back, he is rejecting the idea that players must surrender their souls to the sport. Isaiah dies smiling in the chaos, satisfied that Cam possesses the necessary "killer instinct" to be the greatest, but Cam’s victory is defined by what he refuses to give up. Unlike Isaiah, Cam retains his connection to family and faith, valuing his humanity over the hollow achievement of a title.
The film frames the true villains not as rival athletes, but as the elite class profiting from the players' sacrifices. The owners, a group of wealthy white individuals who view Cam as a "mascot" and refer to him with racial condescension, represent the systemic exploitation inherent in the industry's history. By slaughtering these puppeteers, Cam destroys the mechanism of control, an act the film visualizes with red, white, and blue smoke hanging over the field—a symbol of reclaiming the American dream from those who gatekeep it. This violence is presented not just as horror, but as a necessary catharsis to break a cycle that has destroyed countless lives before him.
Ultimately, Cam’s journey concludes not with him accepting the mantle of the "GOAT" in the way the system intended, but with him breaking the cycle entirely. The revelation that his own father had made a deal with these forces years prior underscores the generational trap he was born into. Instead of continuing the legacy of trauma, Cam ensures that "the next generation" is saved, proving that true greatness lies in the courage to dismantle the systems designed to use you. He walks away not as a mascot for the elite, but as his own man, having conquered the true horror of the film: the loss of self in the pursuit of perfection.
