Vincent "Vince" Ferro stumbles upon a conversation about a deceased individual who was set to embark on a lucrative new job, prompting his desperate need for financial relief. Compelled by circumstance, Ferro pilfers an envelope containing crucial details pertaining to this coveted position. His journey leads him to a remote venue, where upon arrival, he is stripped of his belongings and has his boot heels severed to ensure no hidden surveillance devices are present. Surprisingly, the event organizers, rather than seeking out the deceased candidate, accept Ferro in his place. Unbeknownst to him, he is now partaking in a sinister series of Russian roulette challenges designed for the thrill of wealthy spectators, notably including Jasper Bagges, who indulges in betting on participants' survival.
During this harrowing ordeal, each participant is identified merely by a number. As the frightening game commences, the rules are chillingly straightforward: each participant must load one bullet into their revolver and aim at the individual directly in front of them, firing only when a special light bulb signals them to do so. As the game progresses, the stakes intensify. In the first round, Ferro, assigned as #13, manages to narrowly escape death when he is coerced into pulling the trigger only after threats to his life. The tension escalates in the second round where two bullets are loaded into each gun; Ferraro's survival hinges on the misfortune of the player positioned behind him being shot before any rounds are fired.
With the third round adding even more peril—three bullets are housed within the chambers—Ferro remarkably survives alongside four other contestants. As the game reaches its climax, he finds himself in a final showdown as one of the two chosen survivors. Meanwhile, a fellow participant, Patrick Jefferson, desperately seeks aid from his patron, Jimmy, only to be met with cold indifference. Jefferson attempts to negotiate, revealing the hidden loot he stole prior to incarceration, suggesting Jimmy can claim half only to find out he isn't getting anything.
After an intense duel, Ferro manages to claim victory, earning himself a staggering sum of $1,850,000. Yet, this triumph does not come without repercussions; he discovers that his opponent had an impressive track record in past duels. With his newfound riches in hand, Ferro makes a discreet exit from the mansion to a nearby train station. However, his luck runs out as police begin to close in, forcing him to hide his winnings in a garbage can just in time. Following a brief interrogation, he retrieves the money and, in a touching gesture, sends a portion to his family through registered mail, even purchasing a toy for his sister's upcoming birthday.
Unfortunately, Ferro’s respite is short-lived as he is shot by none other than Bagges, partially in vengeance for previous actions and partly fueled by greed, believing that Ferro possesses the original money bag. In a tragic twist, Bagges leaves with the bag, blissfully unaware that it only contains the toy. As Ferro lies dying, he cleverly swallows the receipt for the package, ensuring neither the authorities nor Bagges can follow the trail to his hidden fortune.
