Ho Fan’s 1987 Carnal Prayer Mat predates the 1990s Sex and Zen cult classic. Without Amy Yip’s star power, it relies on the nudity of an unknown cast. A young man dreams of drowning after passionate lovemaking and asks a Buddhist monk for meaning. The monk warns against excess, but the man marries a virgin, has numerous affairs, and only later heeds the warning.
