Peter Saarinen, a freshman, and Doug Harris, a returning student, arrive at the University of Toronto and quickly find that college life is a mix of social trappings and personal discoveries. Peter lands a job as a waiter in the dining hall, where he endures teasing from Doug and other members of Hunter House, the fraternity that dominates campus life. The shift is awkward at first, but the two men soon cross paths again in the quiet of the library, where Peter is absorbed in The Waste Land and Doug offers a sincere apology for his earlier behavior, signaling the possibility of a tentative truce.

The campus social scene soon pulls them into a night out: Doug and three friends head to a restaurant to “pick up” girls, while Bev, Doug’s girlfriend, performs a striptease for the group before lunch. Doug’s attention drifts away toward other women as Bev talks about her new dress, setting the stage for a complicated dynamic between all of them. In a bid to share his world, Peter invites Doug to his room for Finnish pastries, and reveals he is of Finnish descent through a phonograph record of Finnish music. Meanwhile, Doug reconnects with a piece of Peter’s Finnish world when he learns one of the songs from the Finnish record and performs it for Peter, accompanying himself on a guitar. As exams loom, the dynamics shift.
