Peter Saarinen, a freshman, and Doug Harris, a returning student, arrive at the University of Toronto and quickly find that college life is a mix of social trappings and personal discoveries. Peter lands a job as a waiter in the dining hall, where he endures teasing from Doug and other members of Hunter House, the fraternity that dominates campus life. The shift is awkward at first, but the two men soon cross paths again in the quiet of the library, where Peter is absorbed in The Waste Land and Doug offers a sincere apology for his earlier behavior, signaling the possibility of a tentative truce.
The campus social scene soon pulls them into a night out: Doug and three friends head to a restaurant to “pick up” girls, while Bev, Doug’s girlfriend, performs a striptease for the group before lunch. Doug’s attention drifts away toward other women as Bev talks about her new dress, setting the stage for a complicated dynamic between all of them. In a bid to share his world, Peter invites Doug to his room for Finnish pastries, and reveals he is of Finnish descent through a phonograph record of Finnish music. Doug, curious and perhaps seeking a bond beyond the usual frat circle, asks Peter to bring the record to his own room so they can listen together. A night out then takes them to a Harry Belafonte show, followed by a wander through Toronto’s lively nightlife, where music and conversation loosen the edges of their differences.
The semester pushes forward with its own rituals. After Hunter House hosts a Christmas party, Peter drinks heavily and passes out in the dining hall. Concern drives Doug to abandon a dance early and stay by his friend’s side, choosing loyalty over the party scene. The pair retreat to Peter’s room, where Doug keeps vigil as Peter recovers from the hangover, and the two spend time simply hanging out in the quiet glow of friendship—humbling moments that deepen their bond as they later play in the snow outside.
Peter’s talents begin to bloom in the university’s artistic life when he earns the male lead role in the play Ghosts. Rehearsals bring him into contact with Sandra, and the two quickly develop a romance, navigating the pressures of new love amidst performance schedules and exams. Meanwhile, Doug reconnects with a piece of Peter’s Finnish world when he learns one of the songs from the Finnish record and performs it for Peter, accompanying himself on a guitar. Bev, watching this closeness with a wary eye, questions why Doug seems drawn to someone so unlike the rest of their circle, while Doug admits that this difference is exactly what draws him to Peter.
As exams loom, the dynamics shift. Sandra’s presence influences how Doug can spend time with Peter, and Bev’s and Doug’s relationship faces strain, growing more distant as obligations pull everyone in different directions. Doug even invites Peter to a fraternity dance, but Peter declines, choosing instead to spend an evening with Sandra at a club. The relationship web tightens: Doug sleeps with Bev, a move that strains his ties to Peter and stirs tension when Peter learns of it. The friend’s conflict escalates into a harsh confrontation—Peter urges Doug to leave his room, and Doug’s raw anger erupts as he kicks Peter in a moment of heated reckoning.
The aftermath leaves both men alone with the aftershocks of their choices. Peter finds himself surrounded by the items he has given Doug, a tangible reminder of their fractured bond, and he returns to the library, where he quietly returns to the pages of The Waste Land, searching for meaning in the quiet hours between classes and the noise of campus life. The story lingers on the strains of friendship, loyalty, desire, and the simmering tension of a young man’s rise into adulthood, all set against the backdrop of a city and a university that are both a playground and a proving ground.
