Joel (Fran Kranz)‘s life is upended after he follows the guidance of an abusive television therapist, Dr. Dwayne (Darrell Hammond). To lift his spirits, two friends, Wyatt (Kenan Thompson) and Ben (Zachary Levi), whisk him on a cross-country road trip. Wyatt has converted his van into a traveling hotdog stand called the Weiner Wagon, hoping to land a job with Oscar Mayer.
On the road, the trio meets a string of outrageous characters and goes on a series of silly adventures. As they near their destination, Joel sinks into despair and ends up drunk in a back alley. In a hallucinatory moment, his childhood tormentor, Drake Hanswald (Andy Milonakis), appears, and Joel witnesses his younger self being teased by Drake and other classmates. Realizing he must change, Joel returns to his friends just in time to help them fend off hippies who had stolen Wyatt’s hood ornament.
The next morning, the trio sneaks into the studio where Dr. Dwayne’s show is filmed. After taking down the decoy, the real Dr. Dwayne reveals that he orchestrated the breakup to push Joel to stand up for himself. He also discloses that a wealthy man, saved by Wyatt, is willing to finance the Wieners.
Ben rises to the occasion with a speech in front of the audience and publicly comes to terms with his sexuality.
With their goals achieved, they head home. Wyatt’s Wieners becomes the fourth-largest pre-packaged meat company in the United States. Wyatt lives in a hotdog-shaped house with his dachshund Beyoncé. Ben grows into a successful lawyer and cologne designer who shares a home with his roommate Johnathan and their two cats. Joel invents pants that cannot be yanked down. The Wiener Wagon continues to roll on annual cross-country trips to spread happiness.
