Jesco White grows up in the West Virginia mountains under the shadow of his father, D. Ray White, the legendary mountain dancer. D. Ray tries to steer him toward faith and discipline, using dancing as a way to save his son's soul. Jesco hears voices that promise something wilder beyond the family code, a pull that music and movement can't fully quiet. The stage seems both salvation and temptation from an early age.

From a young age Jesco experiments with dangerous substances, sniffing gas, glue, lighter fluid, and airplane cement. His escalating behavior lands him in reform school where the harsh regime amplifies his inner turmoil. The voices torment him as he endures confinement and surveillance. This period crystallizes the conflict between his talent, his family, and the pull of self-destruction.

In the reform school the voices grow louder, shaping how Jesco sees himself and his future. He tries to honor his father’s word and stay straight, leaning on dancing as a lifeline.
