Will Hay plays penniless, bumbling solicitor Benjamin Stubbins, who returns to find clerk Graham Moffatt relaxing with a Wild West magazine, which Hay confiscates to read later. Hired by Americans claiming to trace Scottish ancestors, Stubbins unwittingly provides a cover for their plan to rob a safe beneath his office. At a Christmas‑Eve fancy‑dress party he alerts caroling police to the scheme.
