The morning after the disastrous dinner, Donghwa is left with a bloody gash on his arm from drunkenly climbing the mountain to look at the moon. Jun-hee shows concern, but stiffens when he embraces her, signaling that the visit has damaged rather than advanced their relationship. Donghwa drives away from the family home, only for his car to break down a few miles later. The mundane failure completes his humiliation after a night in which the family’s politeness gradually stripped away his self-image as a perceptive artist and suitable partner.
Donghwa’s uncorrected shortsightedness gives the ending its organizing metaphor. He has praised trees, sunsets, poetry, and moonlight as though sensitivity to nature proves depth, yet vanity keeps him from seeing either the landscape or people around him clearly. His wound records the physical cost of that pose, while the stalled car undercuts the heroic departure he might imagine. Jun-hee’s restrained reaction is more final than an argument: she can see what he cannot. The reversed fable ends not with a hero transformed by nature, but with a complacent man politely expelled by reality.
