An Indian agent is assigned to pursue a new peace strategy with the Apache, emphasizing respect for autonomy instead of military subjugation. He earns the trust of reservation leaders and the Apache widow (Bancroft) who serves as his housekeeper. Through diplomacy and faith in Apache leadership, the reservation moves toward self‑governance, though tensions flare between the widow and the agent’s Eastern wife, who still has much to learn.
