Set across more than a century and a half of conflict, the film follows Kapa and Pepe—initially prisoners of war, later conscripted laborers, Jews, Hungarian and German soldiers—who are alternately slated for execution and forced to carry out killings. Through stark vignettes in crumbling barracks, bridge‑crossings, and a hidden Stalin‑filled cupboard, it exposes the endless cycle of occupation and liberation, questioning why vengeance against the SS is never fulfilled. A Soviet soldier‑maid closes the story with a quotation from Péter Nádas.
