What Happens at the End of Vadakkan?

How Vadakkan (2025) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

In the final moments the island of Brahmagiri becomes a throat‑tightening altar where the three survivors confront the ancient curse. After a night of terrifying footage, Megha is seized by the spirit of the goddess Mukill, who tries to lure Raman into a seductive trance. Anna, furious and terrified, rushes outside to stop the ritual, only to be strangled in front of the sacred tree. When Raman later watches the recovered recordings, the horror deepens: the camera shows that he himself was the one who killed Anna, a revelation that blurs the line between investigator and perpetrator.

With the tree’s hidden shrine exposed, the dormant entity Kunjum finally possesses Raman. He dons the traditional theyyam ornaments—anklets, red cloth and the ritual mask—and begins the ancient dance, echoing the centuries‑old betrayal of the lower‑caste conduit who was slain by a jealous king. As the mythologist Ayesha warns, lighting a lamp would summon Kunjum’s rebirth; the warning is ignored. Megha, now bound and thought to be possessed, manages to start the car and urges Raman to flee. But the spirit‑ridden Raman wrestles the steering wheel and drives the vehicle straight into the sea, drowning both of them.

The film ends with a haunting reversal of time: the water’s surface folds back, and a child‑like figure in a fetal pose lifts Raman’s watch from the depths, clutching it as if reclaiming a lost life. This final image suggests that the cycle of oppression, forgotten folklore and revenge is poised to begin anew, a perpetual loop where the voices of the marginalized keep resurfacing despite every attempt to silence them.
