Up There

Martin addresses the camera to explain that he died in a traffic accident and is now dead. He clarifies that the dead are not ghosts and cannot walk through walls or move objects. This introduces the 're-start centre' waiting zone that frames the afterlife in the story.

Martin enters the re-start centre and begins attending group counselling sessions that preach positive thinking. He tries to project positivity, though it feels performative. Another dead person befriends him, hinting at the social dynamics to come.

Martin and the other dead are assigned as carers to guide newly dead. He hopes this new role will earn him credit to move 'up there' to a nicer zone. In the end, only his colleague is promoted, leaving Martin still lower in the hierarchy.

Martin is paired with a new co-worker, Rash, and they begin encountering difficult newly-dead clients. They confront a criminal with an unpronounceable name who runs away. The partnership starts with tension and a looming sense of challenge.

Martin and Rash set off to locate the runaway and end up heading toward a seaside town. The chase underscores the peculiar rules and landscapes of this afterlife realm. The pair must track a restless spirit through unfamiliar territory.

In a library, Martin meets Liz and realizes he can read a book or newspaper aloud alongside a living person if they turn the pages. She hides when another dead man appears and admits she used to know him. Her backstory hints she may be a suicide.

They spot the runaway and give chase, but ultimately lose him. They learn the town has a 'starer' father who does nothing, and the runaway is actually Chick, not Polish (Wozcek). Chick’s send-off is scheduled in the paper for the next morning, and Rash wants to stay so Chick can say goodbye to his family.

Martin asks Liz if there is any route out of town besides the last bus at 11. She suggests a boat as an alternative escape. Later, Liz rows with the dead man who is stalking her and apologises to Martin.

In an all-night garage, Rash follows a couple who are a bit wild and decide to stay with them because Mandy has to be up in front of a judge early. Liz joins them and they awkwardly observe the couple having sex in the back of their car.

At Chick's mum's house, Chick explains how his death was a mistake and recounts how he saw Rash chased by two young lads before he was hit by a Fiat Punto. Martin begins to connect the dots and accuses Chick of killing Rash, which the boys mock.

Liz arrives and Martin invites her to return to the centre, but she says she is leaving with her ex who she killed. The moment marks a fracture in their relationship and removes a potential alliance for Martin.

Back in the city, Martin brings Chick in for processing and attends his assessment. Afterwards, Chick asks to talk to Rash, and Martin learns Rash's brother has recovered. He goes upstairs for his own assessment and then descends to help Chick find Rash; they end up at a strip club where Rash has become a starer.

Martin tells Rash that his wife didn’t kill herself and that she let him go, so he must let her go too. Rash wakes and talks to Chick, accepting that Chick killed him as long as it was a bigger, sturdier car. The three come to terms with their deaths and seek some form of closure.
